The Langham News
The Langham News has been bringing news "for the people of Langham from the people of Langham" for twenty-seven years (2014). Printed bi-monthly by the team, and funded by local people and organisations, it carries no advertising and is delivered free of charge to every house in the village. Editorial: Just as the last Langham News was published we heard the sad news of Ruth’s death and we extend  our deepest sympathy to Julian and the family.   Ruth had been involved with the Langham News from its beginning in 1985, first as typist and treasurer and  then, from 1987, as editor. Although in 2005, arthritis and failing sight meant that she had to relinquish the  task of typing, she continued to act as editor until last summer when her health began to deteriorate  significantly. Even when Ruth could no longer see to read your contributions, she could still pick out  grammatical errors, or the need for punctuation, when the items were read aloud at our editorial meetings.  As well as her contribution to the Langham News, Ruth served the village in her years as Clerk to the  Parish Council and through her involvement with the Gardeners’ Association, Village Show and Leisure Club.  A great supporter of Langham, Ruth was efficient and courteous in all that she did. She will be sadly missed by  many in the village for her friendship and kindness, not least by the Langham News Team who will remember  her with admiration and affection.  The sight of snowdrops in and around the village has been an encouraging sign for us over the past weeks.  After such a long and severe winter, the spring flowers and bird song will be even more welcome than usual.  Always welcome to us is your news, and the next copy date is Monday 10th May.  Langham Woodlands – Laurence Martyn This area of Langham may be new to people who have recently come to the village. It can be found on  Mickley Lane, from Ashwell Road. The Woodlands was developed over twelve years ago, as a wildlife mini park,  part of it is planted with shrubs and trees and there is an area for wild flowers. It is very pleasant to sit or  wander in.  The Woodlands is maintained by a group of volunteers. Last autumn a new area was planted up with a  selection of shrubs and trees, as whips, to fill in ground which was full of nettles. A good idea, but although  our helpers dug out the roots, they don’t disappear so easily! So we will need to keep working on this section,  and there is always much to do in general maintenance, such as pruning the shrubs, particularly wild rose  stems, and keeping the brambles in check.  Our normal plan is to meet on the morning of the second Saturday in the month, from spring to autumn.  The first meeting will be Saturday 10th April from 10am to noon. If you would like to join the group please  come along on that morning. You will find us welcoming and glad to have your help, however much you are  able to do.  For more information phone Lorna or Laurence.  Langham and Barleythorpe WI – January meeting – Ann Cook  The first meeting of the year began with the president, Jackie Taylor, presenting a cheque (the proceeds from  the WI stall at Oakham Christmas Market) to a representative from Voluntary Action Rutland. We were told  that the money, £207.90, would go to ‘Families in Crisis’, a group which uses funds for those in urgent need.  After the business meeting, members were treated to a talk by Lynne Hopwood who is a highly qualified  practitioner in Hypnotherapy and other related therapies. Lynne has a sincere and sympathetic manner which,  together with her skills, enables her to help her clients make changes in their lives.  Jackie Taylor was presented with the Lady Ruddle paperweight as the overall winner of the 2009 competitions.
